Do you remember making homemade ice cream as a child? I remember my mother pulling out a huge hand-cranked ice cream bucket and placing it on the front porch. She and carefully place cream in the bucket, fill it with ice and lots of rock salt, then we would all take turns turning the crank. As the ice cream thickened it would get harder to turn the handle. Soon the younger kids weren’t able to help and my teenage sister and mom would continue the churning. It took forever, and when the kids couldn’t crank anymore, dad took over. He made it look so easy, but we knew when it got too hard for him to continue because the ice cream was done! It was always so delicious and the anticipation was unbearable.
