Mom’s Butter Cookies

“This was THE cookie that meant Christmas at my house when I was growing up. Mom always made these and I was allowed to add sprinkles to some. I continued the tradition with my own children, and now my children make them with their children — four generations!”

  • 1 pound butter
  • 2 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2 1/4 tsp vanilla
  • 5-5 1/3 cups flour

Recipe Instructions

1. Bring all ingredients to room temperature. Cream butter, sugar, and eggs. Add in salt and vanilla.
2. Mix in flour 1/2 cup at a time. Unless you have a very good mixer, the last cup will need to be stirred in by hand.
3. Form the dough into three rolls/logs, wrap in waxed paper, and store in the refrigerator for 30 minutes or until ready to slice and bake.
4. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350F. Slice and place evenly on cookie sheet allowing room for cookies to expand.
5. Let the children add their own special touches to the cookies with sprinkles and colored sugars.
6. Bake 12-16 minutes or until the edges turn brown. Cool on paper towels.
7. Store in airtight container. The flavor gets better as the days go by.
