It was delightful to work with Martha from Marmee Dear, who truly brought that dedicated home cooking energy we were looking for to our healthy and homemade joint interview. Martha has been using Bosch mixers for over 25 years and we are proud to be part of her family legacy. For this interview, Martha shared her fast and easy Breakfast-in-Bed Oat Cereal recipe as well as some thoughtful reflections on why cooking at home is so important.
What value do you get from making meals from scratch? Why do you feel it is better and healthier for you/your family?
“My BOSCH doesn’t just sit on the counter – it gets used daily to help me prepare our meals from scratch. I couldn’t begin to calculate the money we have saved from cooking our meals from scratch and baking our daily bread over the past 30 years. We control the ingredients of our meals prepared at home and the time spent in the kitchen together with my children doesn’t have a price tag. Even my sons have learned valuable kitchen skills just by working close by me in the kitchen over their growing up years.
It became a necessity for me to incorporate meals made from scratch as our family grew over the years. We had 11 children around our family table and it was quite an ordeal to grocery shop and prepare meals. We had a large freezer just to keep loaf bread on hand we would buy once a month from the Day-Old Discount Bakery.
It was around this time in 1989 I was introduced to the BOSCH Kitchen Mixer and the novel idea (to me!) of grinding wheat into fresh flour. The BOSCH mixer was life-changing for me in providing fresh homemade nutritious bread for my family. It made it so simple even when I had to make 30 loaves a week to keep up with my growing family. My new motto became: “Homemade was never so easy!” I soon discovered my BOSCH could be used for so much more than just baking our daily bread. We used the blender attachment to make creamy delicious milkshakes for just pennies (it can get a bit expensive to go through the drive-thru and buy milkshakes for 13!). We found out the whips would churn butter, the dough hook would easily mix up triple batches of oatmeal cookies, the slicer would grate 10 lb. wheels of cheese with ease. I added an attachment each year. The flaker attachment to the BOSCH mixer flaked whole oat groats into oatmeal for us that was full of nutrition vs. stale oatmeal from a cardboard box where many of the important nutrients had long since oxidized. I share many of my favorite made-from-scratch recipes using a BOSCH kitchen mixer in ‘Make it Special: Homemade with Love’.”
What’s one of your favorite healthy recipes (old or new) that you recommend for others to incorporate into their health-related resolutions this new year? Please explain why
“My man is an early bird! This is his favorite heart-healthy breakfast…and no I don’t serve it to him in bed. I call it “Breakfast-in-Bed” because I don’t have to get up and out of my cozy covers to serve it to him. I’m really not lazy but do love easy-peasy and it only takes me 5 minutes or less to do it the night before. He gets the benefits of soaked fresh whole grain cereal and I get the luxury of sleeping in ‘til at least the sun is up!
It is simple enough for ANYONE to do this. It is so Awesomeus-Collossemus because you can adjust the ingredients to your dietary needs and taste buds. You will get optimal nutrition if you can flake your own whole oats (I’ve had my flaker attachment for my BOSCH MIXER for a long while but not certain they are available any longer-sad news!) I flake 2 lbs. of fresh whole oat groats at a time and keep them in the freezer. If you can’t fresh-flake your oats…oatmeal from Mr. Quaker will have to do.”
Whether you have a small army to feed or just want to invest a little more time in taking care of yourself, cooking from scratch doesn’t have to be an arduous process. With the right cooking equipment, a healthy dollop of positivity, and a few internet searches, you can be well on your way to living a happier, homemade life.
